Hyderabad: Congress senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha seat from Telangana on Monday.
Accompanied by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, AICC Telangana in-charge Deepa Das Munshi, Ministers, MLAs and party leaders, Abhishek Singhvi submitted his nomination papers to the Returning Officer in the Assembly. A total of four sets of nomination papers were filed.
The by-election has been caused as BRS leader Keshava Rao resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership and joined the Congress. With two years left in the term, the bypoll will be held on September 3. However, the election looks a mere formality as the opposition parties Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are staying away from the contest. Soon, Singhvi will be declared unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana.
Singhvi expressed happiness at being nominated to the Rajya Sabha and said that he would continue to fight for the rights of the State in Parliament and courts.
Earlier, a large number of ministers and party MLAs assembled at the Congress Legislature Party office on the premises of the Assembly from where the Chief Minister led the leaders to the returning officer’s chamber.
